I recently had a phone call with my cousin, who is eight years my senior. She’s well into her mid-40s, raising two adorable children with the support of a loving family. From the outside, she’s thriving—especially in the eyes of people who look up to her, like me.
But the real issue wasn’t about motherhood or family at all. It was the tension in her voice when she spoke about feeling stuck. The sound of quiet heaviness. It suggested to me that she was going through what many people casually call a mid-life crisis.
Now laugh all you want—yes, especially you youngin’s—but the mid-life crisis is a real thing. For some, it’s loud and obvious. For others, it’s internal and deeply private. It all depends on how the energies sit in your chart.
Naturally, I turned to astrology and started wondering whether there were deeper, esoteric connections at play. What I found was fascinating. The astrological transits associated with this phase of life are heavy and loaded. There’s a reason this period has earned such a dramatic reputation. And when you layer these transits on top of each other, it’s no wonder people feel like they’re on an emotional rollercoaster with no seatbelt.
For those curious about the astrology behind the so-called “mid-life crisis,” I’ll break down the major transits we will all be experiencing below. Keep in mind: to truly assess when these transits affect you, you need to know the degrees of your natal placements and compare them to the degrees of the transiting planets. The age range I’ve provided is only an approximation. Everyone experiences these energies differently because no two charts are the same, but the overarching themes are worth understanding.

Pluto Square
Age range: 37-41
Astro Definition: When transiting Pluto forms a 90 degree square aspect with your natal Pluto.
Orb: 2°
Theme: Disruptive & Intense
Your natal Pluto represents secrecy, manipulation, power struggles, trauma and rage. It governs toxicity just as much as transformation and depth. When transiting Pluto forms a square to your natal Pluto, life can feel volatile and deeply unsettling.
This is often a period where buried resentments rise to the surface. You may feel like life is testing you, blocking your progress, or forcing you to confront things you’ve avoided. You want change, but the universe responds with, “Not so fast, figure out what you’re truly dealing with this first.”
Pluto can be disruptive. What’s been hidden demands attention, especially unresolved trauma or power dynamics from the past. And because Pluto is also about control, the more you try to pressure yourself or others, the more out of control things can feel.
The solution isn’t simple or comfortable. This transit requires deep acknowledgment of what’s being disrupted and why. Sometimes that means digging into old wounds, examining lingering resentment, or confronting how power has been misused, by others or by yourself. Pluto is power, but unchecked power turns into paranoia, rage and destruction. Not everything is out to get you, even if it feels that way right now.
With this pressure-cooker transit, honesty is non-negotiable. What actually needs to transform at a deep level? How do you face these challenges without giving your power away? The answer isn’t surface-level.

Neptune Square
Age Range: 40-44
Astro Definition: When transiting Neptune forms a 90 degree square aspect with your natal neptune.
Orb: 4–5°
Theme: Disillusionment & Confusion
Ah yes, this is when the rose-tinted glasses come off. Cue the whomp whomp music.
Neptune governs dreams, idealism, spirituality, creativity and delusion. It represents the higher power that’s intangible, but also escapism, substance use, illness, isolation, and depression. Neptune is basically amplified sensitivity.
During this transit, reality knocks hard. What once felt meaningful, inspiring, or “right” may suddenly feel hollow or misleading. You may realize that a dream you’ve been chasing no longer belongs to you. Or never truly did.
For some, this shows up as a longing for a more creative or spiritual life. Heightened sensitivity can pave way for your spiritual awakening. For others, it’s the crushing realization that the life they imagined in their youth has quietly unraveled. Maybe the corporate ladder feels soul-sucking. Maybe the ideals you built your identity around are now showing cracks.
This is not the time to numb out. Overusing alcohol or substances as escapism will only deepen the fog. Loss of hope and despair can spiral quick into depression. We want something inspiring to believe in, so we run the risk of chasing an illusion. Neptune doesn’t want you unconscious or do disassociate, it wants you to find your inner virtues.
Ask yourself:
Who is the idealized version of me? How do I embody my higher self?
Where have I felt deceived, by others or by myself?
How do I maintain faith when I don’t know how this story ends?
You may feel disoriented, disillusioned and have to confront where your faith truly lies. This is your existential crisis in a nutshell. You are your own source of inspiration now and you hold the key to your inner truth. The important part about Neptune is examining what needs to be released.

Uranus Opposition
Age: ~42
When transiting Uranus forms a 180 degree opposition aspect to your natal Uranus.
Orb: 4–5°
Theme: Radical Reinvention & Individuality
This transit can feel more like a sudden awakening because Uranus is the jolt that wakes you up when you’re ready to break free. This is the era of drastic hair changes, impulsive lifestyle shifts, and sudden declarations of independence. Motorcycles and leather jackets are optional but the urge to rebel is not.
Uranus is the innovator and the cycle breaker. It is our friends and the groups we affiliate with. Uranus excels at breaking things down to understand how they work, but it also discards anything that doesn’t make sense or ineffective. This transition requires a lot of guts because we are now staring at our own conditioning and traditions, wondering why we have held it for so long. We might now want to break away from the relationships, groups, or career that have been restricting us from being who we truly are.
Uranus brings freedom and liberation, but we must ensure we are not causing havoc just to prove a point. You’ve realized you’ve been following the same ol’ rule book for too long, and now it’s your turn to call the shots. We are breaking down and deconstructing the life we’ve built, realizing that some of it was done for others rather than for our own authentic self.
We no longer care for the approval of others; we want the freedom to be ourselves. We might reinvent the wheel (figuratively, but maybe also literally), as we come up with newer and better ways of doing things.
We want acknowledgement but to achieve it, we feel we must develop our own unique brand that separates us from others. As much as this transition might seem fun, a lot of it won’t be fun if we take things too far. If we choose to detach from everyone, we will never form a close bond or relationship with people who truly want to stick around. We forget our purpose while trying too hard to be different.
We can also forget how to be happy and enjoy the sentimental things in life. We can become so rebellious that we forget who stuck around and who remained committed to us. This is a time to consider how to reinvent things for the better and with purpose, not merely as an outlet for rebellion because we are sick of the old.

Saturn Opposition
Age Range: 43-46
Astro Definition: When transiting Saturn forms a 180-degree aspect to your natal Saturn
Orb: 7–8°
Theme: Struggle and Alignment
This is the second time we will go through our Saturn opposition. The first time we’ve ever experienced it was during our teenage years. Remember all the angst and rage? Remember how tough it felt to be a kid at that time? Remember how much we had a problem with authority? Well this time around, we are looking at similar energies but different themes.
We have a problem with authority, only because we feel our own isn’t being respected. We are tested by trials and tribulations that challenge our sense of stability and perseverance. Often, we feel “stuck” because everything we do becomes a hurdle to cross or a complete roadblock. We struggle to find options and solutions but nothing seems to work.
Saturn tests structures that have been in place and those that have not. In areas where something is lacking, you will feel that lack more acutely, sometimes to your detriment. This occurs because your natal Saturn and Saturn in the cosmos pull in opposite directions, creating tension. That tension is why we struggle, like pulling a rubber band in opposite directions and wondering when it’ll snap.
Although we would like the secret recipe out of this phase of life, it is not that simple. We should consider which areas of life need refinement. Sometimes this means that the structures we’ve built for ourselves require maintenance or a complete reconstruction. We need to ask ourselves what rules and boundaries we need to set to correct what no longer works. This phase of life requires a lot of focus and perseverance, because the trials are meant to help you find alignment.
Ask yourself:
What structures need reinforcement?
What boundaries are missing?
Where have I been running on autopilot, and now needs a long term goal?

Nodal Opposition
Age Range: 46-47
Astro Definition: When transiting South Node is conjunct your natal North Node and transiting North Node is on your natal South Node.
Orb: 2°
Theme: Discomfort and Recalibration
A nodal opposition transit often feels like being emotionally pulled in two directions at once. What once felt natural and familiar no longer provides the same sense of safety, while the opposite emotional territory feels distant, uncomfortable, or strangely out of reach. Old coping patterns resurface automatically, not because they’re helpful, but because they’re familiar. At the same time, life seems to apply pressure that nudges you away from that default setting, creating a quiet but persistent emotional tension.
This transit highlights the friction between emotional comfort and emotional growth. The instinct is to retreat to what feels known, even if it keeps you stuck. The solution doesn’t come from abandoning the past or forcing the future, but from tolerating the discomfort of emotional imbalance long enough to recalibrate. Growth occurs when you consciously step away from automatic emotional responses and allow yourself to sit in unfamiliar emotional territory without trying to control, fix, or escape it.

Chiron Return
Age Range: 49-50
Astro Definition: When transiting Chiron conjuncts your natal Chiron
Orb: 1.5°
Theme: Authentic Integration
A Chiron return often feels like old insecurities resurfacing in a way that’s impossible to ignore. Situations, comparisons, or relationships trigger the same familiar internal narrative you thought you had outgrown, exposing where you’ve been quietly overcompensating or avoiding vulnerability altogether.
Because this is natal Chiron conjunct transiting Chiron, the experience is personal and precise. Life mirrors back the exact area where you’ve measured your worth against others, creating discomfort not to punish you, but to make the pattern conscious. The frustration comes from realizing that external achievements or validation no longer soothe this sensitivity the way they once did.
The solution doesn’t come from “healing” or fixing the insecurity, but from integrating it without distortion. This means recognizing when you’re over-performing, self-sabotaging, or seeking approval as a coping mechanism and choosing to disengage from that reflex.
Managing this transition requires grounded self-awareness: slowing down, setting boundaries around comparison, and allowing yourself to exist authentically without needing to prove competence or worth. When the insecurity is acknowledged rather than resisted, its grip loosens, and what once felt like a liability becomes a source of self-love and trust.

This sums up some of the major transits all applying pressure during your 40s. At the end of the day, the so-called mid-life crisis isn’t random, nor is it a personal failure. This is energetic reckoning. These transits don’t arrive to ruin your life, I promise. Pluto demands truth, Neptune dissolves illusion, Uranus pushes reinvention, Saturn tests alignment, and the nodes recalibrate your emotional compass. How this all plays out depends entirely on your chart.
If you want to understand what your mid-life transits uniquely affect you, and how to consciously prepare rather than react, book a private session with me for a one-on-one consultation.
